Primarily correspondence of Richard Gwathmey and his wife, Lucy Ann (Garlick) Gwathmey of Hanover County, Va., illuminating family relationships, education, and the history of the Baptists in nineteenth- century Virginia. Richard's correspondence, 1822-1865, with his children contains religious exhortations, descriptions of Civil War damages in Hanover County, and family news. An account book, 1851-1859, documents expenses at a girls' school that he operated. Lucy Ann's correspondence, 1835-1886, with Garlick family members and her children contains information on religion. Papers of her son, Edward Garlick Gwathmey, include an account book, 1885-1889, documenting his operation of a boys' school, and correspondence, 1858-1927, with friends and siblings. There are also papers of a few other family members.
